Songs of the Week [32]

Julia 08/08/2016     No Comment     Music, Songs of the Week

Today’s Songs of the Week are not only about a lot of new music but also new artist discoveries. I only knew two of the six featured musicians on this week’s list, but now I’m happy I stumbled upon the other four.

Ronika and Stay Here Forever is one of the new discoveries of the week. The newest single of the English singer-songwriter and DJ sounds a little bit like a female version of a The 1975 song and those who know me are aware that this alone will make me like her. I hope there’s more songs like this coming up soon.

Someone to Love by American rock band Atomic Tom is the second of my Songs of the Week. It’s upbeat, energetic and fun, even though the lyrics are quite sad and emotional. The song is taken from their latest album ERA that has been released last year already.

Mystery Jets have released the first single from their upcoming EP The Whole Earth which will be released in September. The World Is Overtaking Me reminds me a little bit of a Queen song (just the bridge to be fair, but still) and the lyrics perfectly describe this anxious feeling we might all have somtimes. Musically, it’s a great rocking blues song featuring some ambient synths and it sounds brilliant.

“We dive in the waves of hope
Drown as the world is floating”

These are some lyrics taken from Dutch singer-songwriter Dotan’s new single Shadow Wind. It’s a dark and somehow haunting pop/folk song with very soulful vocals, certainly worth a listen.

The next one on the list is a song called Gemini Feed by Banks. It’s the second single she’s previewing from her upcoming album The Altar, which will be out on 30th September and is already available to pre-order. Her songs are the perfect combination of heavy beats, soulful and bluesy vocals as well as lyrics about pain, love and sex. Banks has edge and a very individual sound. Make sure you check her out, if you don’t know her already, her debut album Goddess (Spotify // Apple Music) is a good listen as well.

And last but not least, there is a song called I’ll Be There by Schwarz Dont Crack. I stumbled upon this electronica/R&B duo on Spotify’s New Music Friday list (I’m letting you in on my secrets here). Schwarz Dont Crack are an American from New York and a German from Berlin who make soulful electronic R&B. Their debut album No Hard Feelings was released last Friday and I’ll Be There is the track that made me listen to the rest of it. I particularly enjoyed the combination of dark electronic sounds with synths and passionate lyrics.

Hopefully, you enjoyed all the brand new Songs of the Week. Which one is your favourite? Please leave a comment below, I love hearing your opinions!

You can find all the songs I featured on the lists this year on my Songs of 2016 playlist (Spotify // Apple Music) as well. Check it out.
